Thread Spool/Bobbin Storage

Until today my thread spools were lumped in a pile in an old coffee can. It was difficult to find them and the threads always came loose and created such a mess. But not anymore...

I hammered a few nails into the doors of the shelves above my secretary desk...

... then shoved the spools on.

Now when I open the doors, my spools are easy to see, easy to reach when sewing and, most importantly; not tangled! Hooray!

Repurposed Sweater & Glass Jar

I love jars. I cannot remember the last time we threw one out, because I love decorating and reusing them. We recently finished a jar of Costco olives, which yielded me a HUGE jar to play with. Hooray!

I have also been looking for a use for this old sweater. Perfect opportunity to up-cycle both items!

I shoved the jar into the sleeve with the jar opening at the cuff end of the sleeve.

I then tied off the sleeve with a piece of string.

Next, I chopped off just beyond the string.

I then sewed around the bottom of the jar.

Next I chopped off the string, leaving a gathered circle underneath the jar. Then I Mod Podgedthe raw edges to stop them from fraying.

Then I slapped on an circular scrap of fabric to cover up the ugliness.

If I had more patience, I would have liked to sew something on the front. Instead, I finished by wrapping the jar opening with some rope and finishing it with a pretty bow in the middle. So for now, I am rocking the nautical look but it can easily be changed :)

Cupcake Flags with Free Template

I made some cupcakes for a potluck last night with butter cream icing. Seeing as I used a freezer bag instead of a piping bag, the icing turned out less attractive than I had planned. But fear not, because I had a printer and toothpicks!!!

Who will notice the wobbly icing once I place cute little flags on top?

The only problem was that they now looked more suited to a baby shower than a house warming potluck, but not to worry - cute is cute, regardless of the event.

Here is the free template for the flags. Print them, cut them out, fold in half and glue onto a toothpick.

Toddler Hopscotch

Thought I'd share an activity I did in class today.

After rising to the '100 Thing Challenge' (get rid of 100 unwanted/unused items from your house), I had a box full of unwanted junk.

In it were a few old IKEA place mats that were still in good condition so I didn't want to part with them just yet. So, as with most unwanted junk in my house, I took it to work for a re-purposed future.

I had 4 beige cloth ones and two green foam ones. I threw them down on the ground and the kids immediately turned it into a game of stepping stones/ hop scotch.

Last week we used bubble wrap with numbers on it, but it was a bit slippery at times.

These place mats didn't slip, regardless of how many little feet ran over them and it's a much safer option than walking over the blocks, as the children like to do when we are not watching.

I considered writing big numbers onto them, but the children then used some of them in the house centre (to set their table) and they also grabbed the foam alphabet letters and started sorting them by colour onto each of the place mats. The green ones were rather stiff so they were used as trays for carrying around various toys.

So, no numbers for now because clearly they are a versatile resource and I'd hate to confine them to one purpose. I wonder what else my little cherubs will use them for...
